Look, to most Producers this isn't a big deal but to me it really is :-) I've been looking around for a midi controller that can control my current DAW and any in the future as well as double up as a fairly well built piano / synth style keyboard.
In my quest I've demo'd the Axiom Pro 49 and The Novation Impulse 49. To be honest - non of them did it for me, with either the keys not feeling great response wise or the actual features not measuring up to expectation.
There is a large difference in price between the two and of course allowed me to look at other vendors too. I introduce my selected controller ladies and gentleman - although I haven't purchased one yet - I have used a demo.
I've opted for an Akai MPK49!
It comes configured with 16 pre-sets (Live, Cubase etc.) with the option to add your own (which is what I'll be doing in FL Studio). It's a full 49 key setup with after touch ability on both the keys and the pads. The pad setup mimics that of the MPC series and will stand up to much studio abuse.
The LCD is well lit and can definitely be used with ease no matter the lighting environment (Just don't shine something directly upon it though - within reason). Keys are well sized and good to the touch and overall well manufactured.
The biggest reason for deciding on the MPK49 however is it's 3 Banks allowing you to control the 8 faders across them all (24 effective faders). One can literally control everything from the DAW transport to each and every channel in your workspace.
I could go on but won't - my best advice for those who are considering an upgrade or even their first controller - head over to your local sound / studio shop and request a demonstration. This bit of kit is worth every penny! Expect a follow up posting after I've purchased the unit - it won't be for some time due to other commitments but it will be in the near future.
Enjoy!
